Are you hypermobile or double jointed? in one joint, a few, or in your whole body?

Do you have joints in your body that can move way beyond your friend’s movements? Although it can look pretty cool when you are little to flip into a crab position and walk around upside down or push your knees back and stammer around like the walking dead it can certainly play havoc with your body as you get older. You can feel pain in one or many areas of your body. This pain can often be triggered by the smallest of movements. You may find you have to go to see a physio, chiropractor or osteopath regularly to help line your body back up but no sooner has this been done you start feeling the pain again. You find yourself relying on these appointments and or pain killers to get you by, knowing that the smallest of moves could cause you pain for days.

No one really seems to have a long term solution to the problem apart from regular visits for realignment

So why have I decided to blog about this? Well I’ve had a run of clients come to see me recently with this very complaint being either the main reason for seeing me or a side matter to the visit. The client has been told (now labelled) they have hypermobility and there’s not much that can be done. Well I beg to differ. I’m not saying this is the case for everyone with hypermobility but the people that have walked through my door have all had one thing in common. Some joints are doing a heck of a lot of moving and working whilst others have become stuck in a position and are not moving very much at all.

It makes sense to me, seeing we are all connected, that if a joint has become stuck somewhere in your body another joint will have to become more mobile to compensate. Now this might have got to the point of causing pain or it might not but, it will have an effect. Now this is great for me because this is what lights me up! Mapping the joints and movements in the body, tracking back over a client’s injury history to find out when this all began. Then working with the client and their body to create bespoke movements linked to their compensations to begin lining everything back up.

Juliette has hypermobile elbows. She suffers with intermittent shoulder issues. When looking at the timings of her body rotating her arm in and out the other day we noticed how her shoulder blades barely moved but her arms and elbows moved an awful lot! This was creating her hypermobility. We worked on her timings slowing the movement down in her forearm and upper arm which allowed her to speed up the movement in her shoulder blade and thoracic spine. We allowed this to happen forwards and backwards and with in 10 minutes the elbow, arm, shoulder and spine began moving evenly getting rid of the hypermobility. Juliette was able to side plank feeling strong in a way she had never felt before.

It just feels so easy when it’s all lined up.

If this is you or someone you know its worth having a chat with myself and seeing if we might be able to help you too.

"I'm at the end of a long hard journey that I couldn't have taken without you and your wonderful knowledge - I haven't stopped blubbing since I got home - that breathing thing has made me feel like I've let go of something that's been keeping me down and I'm so so eternally grateful."
