This hip pain I am about to tell you about was mine - we're not invincible!

Elle X

I say mysterious as it would have been if I didn’t know how to read the signs and compensations of the body. This hip pain I am about to tell you about was mine. I always think it is nice for you guys to see that we are not invincible and suffer from knocks and niggles just like everyone else.

This left sided hip pain came on pretty sharply as I was taking part in my local park run. Nothing was seemingly different about the run or how we started, just this time about half way round the pain in my left hip started to appear and increase in intensity. Like possibly a lot of you out there I decided to keep running and get to the end. I could ignore it until then. Thinking back now a couple of days before I had noticed a slight stretching feeling around the front of my left hip. But I was busy with clients and life and chose to ignore it. The same thing about a week before that I had felt the very slightest pain under my right foot by the back of my heel for a couple of days. Again my busy life took over, I ignored it and it went away. Or so I thought.

Weirdly, most may think, once the run was over I was quite excited with my new found pain. It doesn’t happen that often to me luckily so when it does it gives me a chance to play detective on my own body. Here’s how my thought patterns went:

What was my resting standing set up?

Standing feet hip width apart and relaxed, I started to clock where the bones of my body were resting. My right foot was ever so slightly flatter and my right knee was slightly rotated in. On my left foot, my big toe was not so in contact with the ground and I had more weight on the outside of my left foot.

My pelvis was more forward on the right meaning my pelvis was rotating left. This meant to balance up my body my ribcage was rotating right. Just take a little moment and put yourself in my bony setup. Can you start to feel any of the symptoms I had felt? The answer is quite possibly going to be yes.

What injuries had I had a few weeks before the hip began to hurt?

A couple of things I could think of were moving house – obviously lots of bending, twisting and lugging boxes around. Secondly in the new garden there are a few dips. I did manage to stumble in one a when doing the garden shed. Now when I say stumble it was barely anything. No swelling, no bruising, no need to ice. It was the tiniest twist. At the time I remember doing a few moves to get it feeling safe again and carried on with what I was doing.

This is where I think my downfall lies. I took for granted that my ankle was ok as I didn’t feel any pain. Now I know that pain is always the last thing to show itself. The body will compensate as much as it can to keep you going before it gives you pain.

What I should have done was, like I’ve talked about above, is do a quick check in on where my bones where. I should have done a quick body scan to find out what had started compensating. This then makes sense that my body had tried to tell me something wasn’t right, with the heel niggle and the stretchy front of hip.

But I chose not to listen to the subtle voice of my body so it needed to shout at me a bit louder. At the hip pain I decided to listen and take some action.

How many of you would have done a quick body scan at that point, how many of you would have rested the hip and how many of you would have ignored the hip pain and waited to see if it got worse or the body had to give you another pain to start listening to it?

It’s interesting to see how a seemingly tiny twist to an ankle (root cause) can show itself as pain in the opposite hip (symptom). Honestly who would have looked at the hip being the problem? If I had done that I could have been chasing pain around my body.

Find out what I did to get rid of my hip pain in part 2 of How the Mysterious Hip Pain Came About.
